BOOK CLUB QUESTIONS

(JUST SOME SUGGESTIONS)

1. What do you think the main themes of the novel are? How does it use the courtship and mating behavior of birds to illuminate these themes?
2. The novel is predominantly told from the first person point of view. Why did Lee make that choice? Where does it deviate from this and what does that tell us about Simon’s mindset at that moment?
3. Simon believes that men strut, display and compete but, as with birds, females ultimately make the mate choice decisions. What do you think?
4. When Simon meets a new woman her attractiveness is immediately evaluated by the PC. Why do you think Lee elected to take this approach? Was it effective?
5. Is Simon a reliable narrator?
6. Simon accuses Phil of being an ‘ungrateful hominid bastard.’ What do you think of Phil? Do you have any friends like Phil? Do you want one?
